Where jewelry experts first see and judge a diamond based on its color, cut, clarity and carat weight, otherwise known as the four "C's", what your loved one first sees is the diamond shape.  An engagement rings design is often sculpted around and inspired by the diamonds center shape.  Ring designers make sure the head and halo perfectly hug the diamond and then they ensure the design cascading down the rings shank and shoulders perfectly accent the center diamond.  This makes it difficult to change the center diamond in an engagement ring, especially when it is a drastically different shape diamond.  It would be much more difficult to change a ring that is made for a round diamond to an emerald cut or princess center than to change from an emerald to a princess shape.
